In the Bayou Yoga Community – Northshore Food Bank
Serving the Northshore community by providing access to basic needs.
The Northshore Food Bank is truly a community food bank. Supported by the generosity of businesses, civic organizations, and individuals, the food bank serves the needs of the most vulnerable in our community by providing food, clothing, and dental care. The Northshore Food Bank serves residents of St. Tammany and Washington Parishes.
The Northshore Food Bank not only distributes food to those in need, but also offers additional key ministries including our Resale Shop and Dental Center.
The Northshore Food Bank Resale Shop offers clothing, household items, furniture and many other great items at greatly reduced rates. Proceeds help support the operations of the food bank.
The Northshore Food Bank Dental Center provides dental care to the uninsured working poor, seniors and disabled at a fraction of the cost charged by most dentists.
The Northshore Food Bank provides food assistance to more than 375 individuals and families each week who live at or below the 130% federal poverty guidelines and have found themselves in need in our community. After qualifying for assistance, an individual can receive a minimum of 35 lbs. of food once each month and families can receive a minimum of 70 lbs. of food each month. Depending on donations, recipients may also receive what we call a “lagniappe” box. A lagniappe box may be filled with breads, pastries, dairy products, fresh produce, or frozen foods.
The Food Bank is supported by local food drives held by individuals, schools, civic organizations and businesses, as well as monetary donations and Second Harvest donations. You can learn more about hosting a food drive here.
The Food Bank is managed and operated by a handful of employees and hundreds of loyal and dedicated volunteers who serve in various roles such as: sorting, packing and distributing food to recipients; providing pick-ups for food donations; providing office support; and assisting with special events and food drives throughout the year.
