How to Create Space and Strength in Chaturanga

Create Space & Strength in Chaturanga

Try using blocks to create space in your vinyasa or to do a series of chaturanga push-ups, like the three push-up series here. By elevating the body, the use of the blocks relieves pressure off the wrists and adds a little extra space for the body to travel so that all body shapes and sizes can move through this challenging pose.

Important note
Using the blocks still has the challenges of alignment and core strength. While you’re building strength in this pose, we recommend coming to your knees in plank and lowering down half way. And you don’t even have to start there– you can actually start by doing chataranga push-ups by the wall.

Listen to Your Body

Most importantly, listen to your body, especially your shoulders– they are not shy. You don’t want to get to the point that they are screaming at you. And believe us, it’s easy to make those guys (or gals) angry!

Talk to Your Instructor
We’ll be exploring this pose during the month of June at the studio. We offer a variety of props at the studio and some practice tips that will help you build to the chaturanga push-up series that we feature here. We encourage open dialogue with your instructors before and after class– so, if you’ve got a question about our pose of the month– ASK!

And, of course, there’s always Nichol’s workshop this Saturday where you’ll also explore this pose in detail.
