Empowered Eating – Pumpkin Spice Latte

Empowered Eating – Pumpkin Spice Latte

in the Season of Pumpkin Spice Lattes

WHAT SANDI SAYS…

It’s Fall, and that means it’s time for Pumpkin Spice Lattes, but just one Grande PSL from Starbucks has 6 added teaspoons of sugar. The American Heart Associate recommends 3 teaspoons a day for children, 6 teaspoons a day for women and 9 teaspoons a day for men.

One pump of Pumpkin Spice syrup from Starbucks has around 7.5 grams of sugar and a grande PSL has 4 pumps of syrup, which will give you 30 grams of added sugar. If you divide the grams by 5 then you will get the number of teaspoons, which would be 6 teaspoons of added sugar.

Here are a couple of options on how to order a lower-sugar PSL:

  1. Whole milk latte with 1 pump of Pumpkin Spice syrup + add extra cinnamon and nutmeg from the bar. I recommend whole milk versus skim to slow the absorption of the sugar into your bloodstream and to absorb the fat soluble vitamins in the milk
  2. Americano with 1 pump of Pumpkin Spice syrup, a splash of heavy cream + add extra cinnamon and nutmeg from the bar

Note: If you don’t do dairy, you substitute almond/coconut milk in for the whole milk/cream, but be aware there is dairy in the pumpkin spice syrup.
